Keti Koti Edition
Keti Koti is an annual remembrance and celebration on July 1 marking the abolition of slavery in the former Dutch colonies in 1863, especially in Suriname and the Netherlands.
The name comes from Sranan Tongo and means “the chains are broken.”
People observe Keti Koti with:
remembrance ceremonies honoring enslaved people and their descendants
speeches, music, dance, and cultural events
traditional Afro-Surinamese and Caribbean clothing
shared meals and festivals
In the Netherlands, major commemorations and celebrations are often held in Amsterdam at places such as Oosterpark, where the National Slavery Monument stands.
